Marsupilami is a very
strange yellow animal with black spots (although there does exist an entirely black
version, its very rare).
His general appearance is that of a Marsupial (which inspired his
name along with the words Pilou-Pilou and « ami » friend in french.)
However, his most surprising peculiarity is his tail. In fact, he
has a long tail, very robust, strong and very agile. Of course, he uses it to grab
objects, but it also has other purposes : if he rolls the end of it into a ball, it
becomes a very effective club. If he rolls it into a spiral, then it becomes a large
spring coil which he uses to do long bounds. It even serves as a fishing rod for piranhas.
In fact, Marsupilami lives in the natural wilderness of the
jungle, the Palombian jungle (name inspired by the french words « colombe » dove and
« palombe » woodpigeon). His basic diet
consists of fruits and piranhas.
He lives in a nest, suspended in a tree, which has the form of a
walnut opened into two halves, and in which an ingenious device permits rapid closing in
case of danger.
With Spirou and Fantasio, he lives adventures outside of his
native jungle, and here we learn the existance of a certain number of other
characteristics. He is, among others, a ventriloquist, amphibious and an ant eater... Back
in his jungle, these characteristics fade. Marsupilami was created in « Spirou et les
héritiers ».
He accompanies Spirou and Fantasio in their adventures. An entire
Spirou album is built around him : « Le nid des Marsupilamis ». As well, he shares
several other adventures independently of Spirou and Fantasio, such as with little Noël.
When Franquin stops Spirou and Fantasio, the personage of
Marsupilami remains his property. Marsupilami returns to live in his native jungle of
Palombie. Franquin makes him live two short adventures in the company of Bring M.
Backalive, a wild animal hunter.
